The Red Hat Society, an international "disorganization"
of women, sprang into existence as a result of one woman giving another a
red hat as a birthday gift, along with a copy of a popular poem in which an
aging woman wears a red hat. The gift was given to remind the friend
to accept aging with humor and high spirits. The phenomenal growth of
the Red Hat Society has proven that women over 50 everywhere see the worth
of deepening relationships while rediscovering the value of play.
